Škoda Superb (2024 Preview)
Our very own Dave O’Caoimh recently took time out to go see the fourth generation of Škoda's Superb in the beautiful city of Prague. This is a vehicle set to build on the strengths of its predecessor, offering an even more sophisticated design, more space, comfort and state-of-the-art technology. The Škoda Superb was launched in 2001 and more than 1.6 million have since rolled off the assembly lines. The Superb has been produced in Kvasiny (Czech Republic), Solomonovo (Ukraine), Aurangabad (India) and Nanjing (China). Over the course of more than two decades it has won numerous international accolades and awards. In Ireland the Superb has been the best-selling car in the segment over the last 7 years with 8,975 Superb models delivered to customers to date. Demand remains very strong with 2023 the third most successful year for Superb sales since the model was launched. The Superb Combi accounted for 19% of the sales mix (1 in 5) with 41% of Superb Sales this year delivered to Fleet Business Customers.
Features
With the new Škoda Superb, customers will once again have the choice between our favourite Combi estate version and the traditional hatchback. Believe it or not both the hatchback and the Combi estate versions of the all-new Škoda Superb are now even longer and taller than their predecessors, while their wheelbase remains unchanged. The estate version’s total boot capacity with the rear seats folded down is a staggering 1,920 litres. Sustainability has been a big part of the new range structure with seven Design Selections featuring textiles made of 100 percent sustainable materials now on offer. The innovative Škoda Smart Dials and a new interior concept is also something we noticed featuring a free-standing 13-inch infotainment screen, which should make for even greater ease of use. Overall the interior has a clean and that wonderful spacious feel which the Superb is now famed for.
Power
With the all-new fourth generation, Škoda is once again setting standards in terms of design, roominess, comfort and safety. Further design and aerodynamic refinements have reduced fuel consumption while improving performance. Three modern TSI petrol engines, including one with mild-hybrid technology, two diesels and a new plug-in hybrid powertrain with an electric range of more than 100 kilometres on the WLTP cycle deliver outputs ranging from 150 hp to 265 hp. The top diesel and the top petrol engine come with all-wheel drive. All powertrains in the new Superb are mated to a DSG automatic transmission as standard.
Costs
Pricing has yet to be confirmed for the Irish market just yet but all 27 of the Irish Škoda dealer network will be notified in the not so distant future so do stay in touch with your local supplier.
Safety
Numerous new and improved assistance systems provide even more safety and comfort. Buyers can expect systems such as the Turn Assist and Crossroad Assist which, are making their debut on this new Superb. Another first for Super is the significantly brighter new-generation LED Matrix beam headlights and DCC Plus which, are most certainly set to light up any Irish back road. A plethora of airbags are also present throughout the cabin to you and your passengers safe.
Summary
After spending some time with this new generation and its hard not to look back on the success of it’s predecessors. Between 2001 and 2008, Škoda delivered a total of 137,000 first-generation vehicles and then with the second generation they sold a whopping 618,000 units from 2008 to 2015. In 2009 they decided to offer the estate version of the Superb and this to was a roaring success. The third-generation Superb was launched in 2015 and a total of 845,000 units have been produced to date and as mentioned in the intro, it has been a fantastic seller here in Ireland and won numerous awards. For us its the Combi ‘Estate’ Diesel variant which we have also ways loved. It’s hard to beat the space, comfort and fuel efficiency it offers. With that said the new hybrid powertrain options look interesting and we cant wait to bring you a first drive report in thew new year. For now it looks like we will have to wait until mid 2024 for the Superb to arrive.
