Which Electric SUV Has Large Boot Space?
Need decent boot space but you are not sure which, electric SUV to choose? Many of us imagine that the intrusion of large batteries can impact on boot space but the truth is, the landscape of electric vehicles is constantly evolving with new models regularly introduced to the Irish market. Packaging of the battery is now usually deep in the floor pan and few vehicles even have transmission tunnels inside. With that said, when it comes to the size of the boot in an electric vehicle, it's important to consider that different EV models might have varying dimensions, and the "biggest" boot can differ dramatically with the seats in the rear folded up or down!
Lets look at some of the electric vehicles currently for sale in Ireland either new or secondhand with generous boot space:
Tesla Model X
The Tesla Model X electric SUV with its distinctive falcon-wing rear door design has to be the king of load space. We have refrained from calling it boot space with this vehicle because it can take 2,367 litres of load volume between the rear with the seats folded flat and the 187 litre front boot or ‘frunk’. Very impressive!
Audi Q8 e-tron
The Audi e-tron is a luxury electric SUV that offers a spacious rear cargo area. By avoiding the seven seat option, Audi has maximised the available space inside to 569 litres or a generous 1,637 litres with the rear seats folded down.
Jaguar I-PACE
The Jaguar I-PACE is an all-electric luxury SUV with a decent cargo space. Jaguar quotes a 656-litre boot capacity with the rear seats up, 1,435 litres when they’re folded. There’s also a 10.5-litre storage cubby between the front seats, and a tiny front boot which can still take a soft overnight bag.
KIA EV9
The EV9 all-electric SUV is fast becoming a common sight on Irish roads and rightly so. As the company’s first three-row electric flagship SUV, the spacious, and striking EV9 is a rugged, sophisticated, and a technologically advanced machine with impressive boot space. Expect 333 litres of space even with all three rows of seats in place or a whopping 828 litres when all seats are flat.
Volvo EX90
The EX90 is Volvo’s fully electric premium 7-seater SUV that must be considered in the hunt for more boot space. Although it can cover up to 600km on a single charge with zero tailpipe emissions it can also swallow up to 347 litres in seven-seater configuration or 692 litres in five-seater mode.
Mercedes EQS SUV
The flagship seven seater is a stunning piece of machinery that combines the benefits of a luxurious saloon with the spaciousness of an SUV. The boot capacity varies between 645 - 880 litres depending on the position of the 13 centimetres sliding rear seats. Either way its very impressive especially with the range of 672 kilometres that the EQS SUV 450+ has recorded.
Ford Mustang Mach-E
This all-electric SUV from Ford boasts a sizeable rear cargo area that can be expanded by folding down the rear seats. Expect 402 litres to the parcel shelf (519 litres to the roof). There's also an 81-litre storage space, or 'frunk', under the bonnet, which is plastic-lined and has a drain should you carry any wet items.
It is worth noting that certain specifications may have changed since this update and as mentioned at the top of this article, the electric vehicle options here in Ireland are growing fast with new entrants to the market almost monthly. As always, we would advise you to do some further research but this should give you a good overview if boot space is of priority for your next electric SUV.
