Keeping your car in top shape means regular servicing, but understanding the jargon used by mechanics can be confusing. Terms like service interval, basic service, full service, and timing belt/chain are frequently mentioned, but what do they really mean? In this DoneDeal guide we break down these key terms, explains when they are needed, and helps you find manufacturer recommendations to ensure your car stays roadworthy.

What is a Service Interval?

A service interval refers to the recommended period between car servicing. Manufacturers set these intervals based on mileage or time, whichever comes first. Depending on the model, service  intervals could be every 15,000km or annually. Regular servicing ensures your car runs efficiently, prevents wear and tear, and reduces the risk of breakdowns. Skipping services can lead to higher repair costs and reduced resale value.

How to find your car’s Service Interval

  • Check your owner’s manual where the manufacturer provides a schedule.

  • Look inside the service booklet where past services might be recorded.

  • You can also visit the vehicle manufacturer’s website or a dealership.

  • Most cars these days display a service reminder light on the dashboard.

What is a Basic Service?

A basic service (sometimes called an oil and filter service) is the most common type of maintenance. It includes Engine oil change removing the old oil and replaces it with fresh oil to keep the engine running smoothly. An oil filter replacement to ensure the new oil circulates cleanly through the engine. A general health check to includes inspecting fluids, brakes, tyres, and lights will also be done.

How to know if your car needs a Basic Service?

Check the service interval and keep an eye on the dashboard service reminder lights. If you notice engine noise, sluggish performance, or dark, dirty oil on the dipstick then its most certainly time.

What is a Full Service?

A full service is a more comprehensive check-up of your car, going beyond a basic service. It typically includes all items from a basic service along with air filter, fuel filter, and cabin filter replacement (if necessary). A brake inspection and fluid top-up or replacement along with tyre checks, suspension, steering, and exhaust system inspection. A volt meter should also be used for a battery health check.

When is it needed?

Most manufacturers recommend a full service every 20,000-30,000 km or every 1-2 years. Again the owner’s manual lists manufacturer-recommended service schedules. Some cars have service indicators that track engine usage and mileage but if the car feels less responsive, uses more fuel, or if past servicing has been skipped, then its best to have it done.

What is a timing belt or timing chain?

The timing belt (or timing chain) synchronises the engine’s camshaft and crankshaft, ensuring smooth combustion. A Timing Belt  is made of rubber and needs periodic replacement whereas a timing chain is made of metal and is designed to last longer, often the lifetime of the car. If a timing belt snaps, it can cause major engine damage, leading to costly repairs. A failing timing chain may cause rattling noises, poor performance, or engine misfires.

When should it be replaced?

Timing Belt: Usually between 60,000 - 120,000 km, or every 5-7 years.

Timing Chain: Typically lasts the life of the engine, but should still be inspected if the car has high mileage.

How do I check if my car has a timing belt or chain?

Start by looking in the owner’s manual. You can also check your vehicle history report or ask a dealership for more info. Most people simply Google the car make, model, and year to find out.
