The DoneDeal guide to selling communion dresses

The cost of a child’s Holy Communion can be a worry for many families. Why not recoup some of the costs and pass on savings to others by reselling that ‘worn once’ communion dress on DoneDeal?

Communion suits and communion dresses have little in common except they are bought for a once-off occasion and are outfits a child will outgrow it quickly.

While boys make get to wear their suits for other occasions, long gone are the days when a communion dress was re-worn at school events or at religious processions. These days it’s often worn for church and photos only before a child changes into other clothes. In other words, it’s barely worn once!Communion dress with bow on the back of it

While ‘hand me downs’ were commonplace in times gone by, sometimes it’s not as easy to pass on something for free to friends or family.

People still like to feel they’ve bought something.
If you have a communion dress sitting at home in the attic, wardrobe, or old dress up box, you could try selling it on DoneDeal. It might be easier than giving it away.

Benefits to selling a communion dress on DoneDeal

  • Make back some of the money you originally spent
  • Make space in your house by getting rid of things you don’t need anymore
  • Make communion day more affordable for other parents

How to sell a communion dress on DoneDeal

  • Put yourself in the buyer’s shoes – think what they want to know
  • Add your ad to our children’s clothes section
  • Pick a price and display it clearly in your ad
  • Read the label and copy into the ad the length of dress, age suited to, height and if relevant the waist size
  • If those details are not on the label take out a measuring tape and give details in inches and centimetres
  • Dry clean or hand wash the garment (check the label!) so it is ready for someone straight away
  • If it is a designer communion dress or by a particular brand, write that into the description – if you paid more for that, someone else may too
  • Describe the features eg sequins etc
  • Explain whether you will also be selling the veil (some people like to keep this)

How to place an ad that will sell

Think about the following things before you attempt placing an ad.

Short Description: be accurate and fit in relevant details including price.

Long Description: white communion dress isn’t going to cut it for a buyer. Give details, even if it means getting your child to describe it and writing down their descriptive words.

Photos and Video: read some of our articles about how to take photos, how to do video and ways you can include video in an ad. Put the dress on a hanger somewhere bright and take photos of the dress, both close ups and ones where people can see the full dress. Add a video showing the front and the back to give a buyer an idea of how the fabric flows.

The selling process: You may decide to include in your ad that a buyer only rings between certain times. You can also mention if buyers have to come to you or you will go to them.

Sold!: Once you’ve sold the item, don’t forget to go back into your ad and mark it as sold. This will save you calls from people who think it’s still for sale.
