It’s all about numbers, numbers, numbers

Growing numbers

We at DoneDeal are a bit nerdy, we love numbers. I know, numbers can be mind-numbing and boring, but in the end a web site like ours is all about numbers.

One important number is how many people actually come to the web site to buy and sell.

Another important number is how many things that are advertised for sale.

And the most important number of all is how many of the ads that actually end up with a sale.

We look at these numbers on DoneDeal all the time. Here are some of our September numbers:

  • Over 2,500,000 customers came to DoneDeal to buy and sell in September
  • An impressive 9,344 ads sold on DoneDeal in September
  • The total value of items sold on DoneDeal in September was €20,906,000 (and that is only counting the ads that actually tell the price)

What do you think about those numbers?

Congrats on the numbers, numbers and numbers to all the fine team at DoneDeal.ie

As regards Mr. Dunn on Newstalk he showed alot of initative by trying to copy your business idea. He may have a Dunn sounding surname but remember its not a deal unless its a DONEDEAL !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Great numbers – would be interested to learn where they are derived from? Server logs or client-side measurement tool?

Seems Ben Dunne is gunning for you guys on Newstalk a lot these days :)

      Hi Richard,

When people remove their ad from DoneDeal we always ask them if they sold their item or not. Then it is easy to add up the price for all items that were marked as sold.

We only know the asking price, so the items may have been sold a bit cheaper after a bit of bargaining. But there are also lots of ads on DoneDeal that do not mention the price, and we have not counted them.

Fair play.. how do ye do it with so many free ad sites & ebay etc? BTW Ben Dunne only gave donedeal some free advertising :)

i advertise regularly on done deal and works everytime. i was wondering Fred if you considered doing a larger ad for a higher price and keeping it on the main page for longer.. everytime i advertise haylage within a couple of hours i get between 10 and 15 new customers everytime . A couple of years ago i placed a half page ad in the dublin horse show programme costing €800 and not a single call from it , so bloody well done DoneDeal

by the way i have an idea for a website that could go global in a very short time , but not sure who to see or get advice about setting it up ..
it kind of on the same basis as donedeal but a completley different slant and its something that everybody needs, but nobody has thought of , and it dosent involve selling , any chance of a bit of help

good website but your search engine is crap

    • Fred says:
      November 5, 2009 at 10:42 pm

      Hi Mark,

I would be very interested in knowing what you want to search for. We will use that information when we update our search engine.

  12. jimmy says:
    November 3, 2009 at 10:22 pm

    Good numbers.
With all the selling websites popping up now i suppose its good for a seller to know the amount of potential buyers who browse your sight.

I just wish you’d have more filters for searching cars for example (like mileage, year from and too, and a key word option that does not include the body of the add (Only the title)). Well done all the same. Jimmy.

      Hi Jimmy,

Thanks for the feedback, it is much appreciated. We have great plans for our search engine, but unfortunately it will probably be early next year before we get to make all the changes you suggest.

Please let us know if you have other ideas how we can improve the site.

I think returning posters of ads or advertisers of business should have some sort of reputation or feedback system, so buyers would be confident that they were getting a good deal

    November 4, 2009 at 12:10 pm

they only put nice comments up folks, dont b fooled reading all the good stuff .. youll also b charged 3.50 per ad wen ur bill arrives.. contact golden spider awards now as i have done to filter this scam out.

      Hi Dave,

I know the phone prices can be a bit confusing. Unfortunately the Irish laws for the cost of the phone calls are very vague. Calls from almost all landlines cost €3, but some of them charge €3.50.

Please note that we don’t get anything extra from those companies, it all goes straight to the phone company. Please feel free to contact your phone company and let them know that you don’t like their pricing.

You can read more about the phone costs in our help system:

great site but pity u cant filter out these clowns who breed various crossbreed lap dogs, make up some stupid name for their new “breed” and then try and charge a crazy amount for a worthless animal.

I bought a beautiful yorktese puppy last month through a done deal ad. She has brought much joy to our family already and hopefully years more. What kind of clown gets irritated because someone sells a puppy from parents of two different pedigrees and how could anyone refer to any animal as being worthless. It is insulting to animals and to the people who buy them and to the breeders who for the most part do a great job.

  25. Dave says:

Do ye sell stolen items on this site?

  26. Gary says:
    November 8, 2009 at 2:32 am

What I am confused about is the number of ads that say “No time wasters please” and after their item or “vehicle” is sold they don’t remove their ad. I read an ad, call the number or email them, eventually find out the vehicle or item is sold. They are wasting my time by not removing their ad. Aren’t they time wasters too?????

For reference, I selected 8 vehicles I was interested in. I called all 8 and all 8 were sold, some ove 40 days ago. “My time was wasted”

Advertisers should be made aware that removeing their ad is part of the process.

    Gary
