March – Green Fingers with Rosa O’Connell.

by Rosa in category News & Awards

Hi, I’m Rosa O’Connell and the guys at DoneDeal have asked me to give some tips on gardening over the coming months. Please feel free to post any questions or comments!

Here’s some tips for the garden in March:

Vegetable Garden:

- Prepare soil
- Plant onion sets.
- Plant early potatoes.
- Sow early varieties of peas and carrots
- Plant autumn sown brassicas and Vegetable plants bought in the Garden Centre.

    Greenhouse:

    - Clean the greenhouse if not already done.
    - Sow greenhouse vegetables e.g. Tomatoes, cucumbers, chillies, peppers.
    - Repot and top dress hose plants and conservatory plants

      Lawn:

      - Start to mow the lawn on a high blade setting if it is dry enough.
      - Edge the lawn.

        Ornamental Garden:

        - Deadhead daffodils, but allow the foliage to die down naturally.
        - Spruce up the garden – weed, dig over borders, mulch.
        - Remove weeds and moss on hard surfaces – paths and driveways.
        - If the ground is not frozen, lift and divide herbaceous plants.
        - Prune your roses.
        - Apply a balanced fertiliser to tree and bush fruit.
        - Sow hardy annuals outdoors.
        - Prune summer flowering shrubs, e.g. Buddleja, and Lavatera.
        - Check for slug damage, and control if necessary.
        - Plant spring bedding.
        - Hoe to control annual weeds.

Hi John. The clay in your garden is very alcaline.
Go into your builder suppliers and buy a bag of lime and put it on the grass.
This will burn the moss and then after a week put10 10 x20 on it to make the grass grow better, Happy gardening this year.
            bye now and be good

            Hi there,
I’ve moved into a house with lots of daffodils-only 2 of them are flowering tho, the rest are just leaves, is there anything I can do for next year?

Hi Kathy, would it be possible to either sink a discrete planter into the soil or to place a planter on the grave. You could then plant seasonal bedding to have all year round colour

Hi Annette, daffs will not flower if they have not been planted deep enough,if they are overcrowded ,if the leaves have not been left to die back the previous year or if they are lacking in nutrients. l

Hi John, Moss usually indicates an underlying problem- poor infertile soil, acidic soil, excessive shade, poor drainage, or soil compaction. I’ll post a seperate blog about moss in a few days.
